We hoped to end this with the seventh stream,

for seven suites in Gnawa.

It's fair and fitting that

Moroccan musicians have the stage from here.

Though if you like this series, there is always

more to hear.

HISTORY: SEVEN EARTHS, SEVEN HEAVENS

Seven celestial earths were borne from

the sacred dunya, an ancient

serpentine egg and our world today...hajjaj divided it.

And a trifecta of black, "red" and white yolk

cascaded down upon ancient ground.

This is Earth as we have experienced it in human form.

Dunya breached the heavenly white sea

and kept a fluffy soff on their head.

Gnawa descriptively allude to this supernatural cosmogony:

a divine AND physical journey.

That fabric held Gnawa's colors: red, brown, yellow,

green, white, black, blue and multi-colored.

Sidi Musa's sedr tree grows between our world

and the next, as prophets are mediums

like their landmarks.

Gnawa are also playing the guembri

(10-minute sample),

krakeb and tbal or ganga drums

with over 100 soulful redemption songs (nubat).

Jelis from Senegambia (Mande Music)

and Hausa musicians mingled along caravan

routes to create diasporic blues.

Gnawa ritual takes us toward the stars and inner spirit.

These customs include music, spiritual preparation in offerings and praise!

This Ashantee kola nut map

illustrates the trade behind

Moroccan-West African history with Gnawa.

They were exchanged

for thousands of these and cowrie shells...

shells that still are sewn

on sheshiyat from Bambara communities

in modern-day Ghana, Mali-

the Western Sudan.

Kano Emirate was a Hausa kingdom which was near Bouala,

a town in modern-day Niger.

Muhammad al-Maghili wrote a treaty

on sharia for King Rumfa (1463-1499)

(North African Muslim Scholars...)

So North African-West African cultural interaction

has definitely shaped Gnawa and continental history,

even to this stream today.

Desert blues became a music beyond national

and physical borders: Gnaoua.

This page assembles all seven suites

throughout a recorded lifetime.

Thanks for watching Gnawa with Nikki.
